어제 서울에서 있었던 합동사고조사단의 공식적인 발표로 이번 천안함 침몰의 원인은 북한 잠수정의 어뢰에 의한 공격이라고 규정하였습니다. 그렇지만, 수많은 한국민은 사건의 진실과는 동떨어진 이 발표에 크게 분노하고 있습니다. 인터넷을 통하여 자유롭게 교환되는 정보를 통하여 대부분의 한국 시민들은 이번 참사가 단순한 좌초 혹은 미 해군의 잠수함과의 충돌로 인한 사고로 여기고 있습니다. 그 이유로는 사고 당시 미국과 한국의 해군 함정들이 주변 해역에서 키리졸브 합동군사훈련을 실시하는 상황이었기 때문입니다.
미 해군의 잠수함이 이번 사건에 연루된 것으로 추정하는 이유는 다음과 같은 정황과 증거들입니다. 미군 헬리콥터가 분리된 천안함과 상관없는 제 3의 부표로 알려진 위치에서 무엇인가를 싣고 가는 사진이 공개되었는가 하면, 그 장소에서 작업하다 숨진 한주호 준위의 장례식에 주한 미 대사가 방문하였고, 어뢰 폭발로 인한 아무런 증거도 찾을 수 없는 천안함의 아랫 부분엔 어떤 물체에 아주 깊게 긁힌 자국이 너무도 선명합니다. 또한, 한국정부와 군부는 사고의 원인을 밝혀줄 명확한 증거가 될 사고 당시의 통신내역과 TOD 영상을 공개하지 않고 숨기고 있습니다.
대한민국 정부가 이번 사건의 원인을 터무니없이 북한의 어뢰공격으로 발표함으로 남북관계는 현재 최고의 긴장이 조성되고 있습니다. 그렇지만, 현재의 한국정부가 들어선 지난 2년여 동안 한국인의 인권과 자유는 크게 억압되어왔고 진실을 말하는 언론은 통제되어 왔기 때문에 미리부터 북한의 어뢰로 표적을 정하고 그것에 맞춰서 짜깁기 수사를 한 이번 조사단의 발표를 한국인들은 믿지 못하고 있습니다.
지금까지 오바마 대통령께서는 대부분의 한국인들로부터 높은 기대와 지지를 받고 있으며, 대통령께서 상호 존중과 정직을 바탕으로 한미 관계를 운영해 나가기를 바라고 있습니다. 만일 이번 천안함 사건의 진실을 조작한 한국정부의 발표를 그대로 지지하면서 진실을 말하지 않는다면 수많은 한국의 민중들이 미국과 오바마 대통령께 크게 실망하지 않을 수 없게 될 것을 우리는 우려하지 않을 수 없습니다. 진실은 오래지 않아 밝혀지게 될 것이고 그 진실을 알면서도 덮어두는 일에 미국도 함께 하였다는 사실을 인식하게 될 한국인들은 더 이상 오바마 대통령을 지지할 수 없게 되고 미국을 우방으로 여길 수 없게 될 것입니다.
또한, 오바마 행정부가 들어서면서 한국인들이 가졌던 남과 북의 평화로운 관계에의 기대와 달리 오히려 현재와 같은 최악의 긴장관계를 조성하는 한국 정부와 함께하는 일은 한국민들로부터 엄청난 원망과 분노를 불러일으킬 것입니다.
대통령님, 우리는 대통령께서 미 합중국이 오래전에 간직했던 이상과 지구 상의 모범된 국가로서의 위상을 되찾기를 추구하고 있음을 진심으로 믿고 있습니다. 대통령께 간절히 청원합니다. 모든 사람들이 받아들일 수 있도록 공정하게 천안함 사고를 조사해 주시고 그 모든 결과를 공개해주시기 바랍니다. 진실을 제대로 밝혀주는 용기있는 결정으로 미국과 대통령께선 모든 사람들의 지지를 다시 받게 될 것이고 이 세상은 보다 평화로운 곳이 될 것입니다.

Dear Mr. President:
We, Saesemo, are an organization of Korean-American citizens in Seattle striving for a better world. We ask your help in uncovering the truth behind the recent sinking of the Cheonan, a ROK naval ship happened on March 26 in the Republic of Korea.
An international team of civilian and military investigators declared earlier in Seoul that a North Korean submarine fired a homing torpedo at the Cheonan and had sunk the ship. Many outraged Koreans question this conclusion as a far from the truth. By exchanging information freely on the internet, a sizable number of Koreans believe that the tragedy may have caused by a simple stranded or a collided accident involving a US submarine. At the time of the accident, the US and ROK Navy ships were participating in Key Resolve, a joint naval exercise, that was held in close proximity to the accident scene.
Some of the evidence that points toward an accident involving a US submarine includes photos of U.S. military helicopters carrying unidentified objects from the third position of the buoys, the U.S. Ambassador to Korea attending a funeral service for a navy warrant officer who has died while he was in search diving from the third position, and deep serious scratches on the side of lower part of the sunken ship showing a collision with an objects, rather than a single torpedo hit. The government of South Korea has not revealed any key evidence, including the communications records and TOD images at the time of the accident.
By allowing the media to suspect North Korea's torpedo as the cause, the South Korean government has further raised tensions between the two Koreas. The current government of Korea has repeatedly shown its contempt for human rights and civil liberties, as well as freedom of information, for the past two years since they took over the office. For this reason, most Koreans also do not believe there is any truth in this joint investigative report because they have preconceived the cause of accident as a North Korea torpedo from the beginning and focused on all their investigative efforts to make it fit.
As you are aware, most Koreans ardently support your presidency, and have high hopes for a different kind of relationship between the US and Korea, on-e that is d on mutual respect and honesty. If the truth of such a terrible tragedy as the sunken Navy ship is not uncovered and told, the dismayed Koreans will have nowhere else to turn to. The bitter history of cover-ups will remind them that the US is not to be relied upon as a true ally, even with an enlightened president at the helm. South Koreans have had a high hopes of having a peaceful relationship with North Korea when the Obama administration took office, but allowing the terrible tension between the two Koreas to further escalate by siding with the south Korea government, if the truth is otherwise, will provide an explosive anger and resentment from Korean people.
Mr. President, we sincerely believe that you wish to help the US remember some of its forgotten ideals and stand among the nations as a model. By launching a credible investigation and openly sharing the result, you will help all of us come closer to this meeting the goal and toward a more peaceful world.
